Diagnostic 3D Mammogram

Exam Time: 30 min Results Delivered in: Same Day

A 3D mammogram is an imaging test that combines multiple images that create a three-dimensional detailed picture of the breast. This allows us to evaluate and view your breast tissue more accurately.

A diagnostic mammogram is used to investigate imaging findings or breast changes/symptoms, such as new breast lump, dimpling, skin changes, pain or nipple discharge to name a few. A diagnostic mammogram includes additional targeted mammograms images and sometimes targeted ultrasound images as needed as well.

Why get a 3D mammogram

The main benefits of 3D mammograms are increased breast cancer detection and reduced unnecessary callbacks for additional imaging.

We only do 3D mammograms, even if your insurance company only covers a 2D, because we care about your breast health. 3D is beneficial to ALL patients, especially those with dense breast tissue. Given Lyra’s investment in top-of-the-line technology, there is no additional radiation compared to a 2D digital mammogram.

The Purpose of a 3D mammogram

  • Reduces recall rates by 40-50%

  • A mammogram offering higher breast cancer detection

  • Reduces false positives

What to Expect

The process of a 3D mammogram mirrors that of a standard mammogram.

Our technologist will compress the breast in the same manner as a 2D mammogram. This compression is crucial to effectively spread out the breast tissue to ensure clear and precise images. While 2D mammograms only provide 1 image of the breast, 3D produces multiple images allowing improved visualization, leading to increased detection of small, subtle masses.

Unique to Lyra, our software alerts us to the presence of dense breast tissue immediately after your mammogram. This is important because it will allow Lyra patients the option to have supplemental Automated Whole Breast Screening the same day.
