Improving Patient Access to Supplemental Screenings [HB 143]:
Expanded Breast Cancer Screening Coverage in Idaho
Effective January 1, 2026
Idaho’s new breast cancer screening law (HB 143) expands insurance coverage for patients who are at high risk for breast cancer and/or dense breast. This law improves access to supplemental breast screening for patients who need additional imaging beyond a standard mammogram.
What This Means for You
If you qualify under the new law:
-
-
Most Idaho-based commercial insurance plans will cover one supplemental breast screening per year
-
-
There is no out-of-pocket cost (no copay, deductible, or coinsurance)
-
The exam must be performed at an in-network facility
-
Self-insured employer plans are not required to follow this law. Please check with your insurance company directly to confirm eligibility.
- This expanded coverage helps remove financial barriers for patients who need additional screening.
What Is Supplemental Breast Screening?
Supplemental screening is additional breast imaging performed alongside routine screening mammography when standard mammograms may not be enough.
Covered screening options may include:
-
Contrast-Enhanced Mammography (CEM)
-
Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS)
Who May Qualify?
You may be eligible for covered supplemental screening if one or more of the following apply:
-
Personal or family history of breast cancer

History of a high-risk breast biopsy (such as atypical cells)
-
Known genetic mutation linked to breast cancer (such as BRCA1 or BRCA2)
-
A close family member with a known genetic mutation

Prior radiation treatment to the chest at a young age
